Welcome

I might add, Malcolm, that today al-Zawahri, al Qaida's CEO issued a statement concerning the Egyptian revolution in which he dismissed democracy in general ..... the very thing the majority of demonstrators are fighting for .... even the Brothers. Democracy, al-Zawahri said, "means that sovereignty is to the desires of the majority, without committing to any quality, value or creed. A democratic state can only be secular, meaning non-religious." That is why al Qaida is unhappy with these protesters. Arabs are taking back their countries and there is no place for Bin Laden and his zealots.

The people of Egypt need to be permitted to choose their own destiny and to an unknown extent they now have that opportunity. I hope they are able to enact the sort of government of their choosing through a free & fair democratic process. I hope they choose a secular government, a representative democracy, establish civil liberties like freedom of speech, assembly, the press, religion, guarantees of due process and rights for minorities including women. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I have no doubt there are many there who want all or at least part of that to one extent or another.
